• 20 UGM postgraduate scholars to receive new Jardine Foundation Scholarship each year
• Jardine Foundation appoints Ibu Retno Marsudi as Senior Advisor to lead its focus on strengthening its impact on higher education in Indonesia 

Jardine Foundation (the Foundation), the education foundation of Jardine Matheson, has launched a new scholarship scheme for postgraduate (PG) students at the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), to nurture students, researchers and future leaders committed to serving their communities. This new initiative will align well and support the priority programme of the Government of Indonesia on education.

Taking effect immediately, the new scheme will provide 20 postgraduate students with full-ride scholarships each year, covering tuition and mandatory living expenses. It is open to newly enrolled UGM postgraduate students with a strong commitment to supporting local communities and who have financial need. Interested and eligible students can apply for the 2026-27 admission year via the UGM website.

The new PG scheme reflects Jardine Matheson’s long-term commitment to Indonesia and its belief in education as a force for strengthening communities. It builds on the Foundation’s strong existing partnership with UGM, including its undergraduate scholarship scheme which was established in 2022 and provides scholarships to 15 students with financial needs a year.

Jardine Foundation and UGM marked the launch with a ceremony on 31 August, attended by representatives from Jardine Matheson, Jardine Foundation and UGM, as well as past and present Jardines-UGM scholars.

The Foundation also introduced Retno Marsudi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia from 2014 to 2024, as Senior Advisor, leading the Foundation’s focus on strengthening its impact on higher education in Indonesia.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ibu Retno Marsudi said, “Education has the power to transform lives, strengthen communities and build a nation’s future. Initiatives like the Jardine Foundation Scholarships demonstrate the important role partnerships between the private sector and educational institutions can play in expanding access to opportunity. I am delighted to witness the strong collaboration between the Jardine Foundation and UGM, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact on future generations of Indonesia.”

Ova Emilia, Ph.D.

Established in 1982, Jardine Foundation has been supporting access to higher education for students across markets in which Jardine Matheson’s portfolio companies operate in. Over US$60 million has been donated to fund over 500 students globally through local scholarships or to the universities of Oxford or Cambridge. In Indonesia, about 100 students have received scholarships under the Oxford and Cambridge schemes, while 55 local students have received scholarships at UGM.
